They really don’t do much other than loosen a little of the creosote, but you will still need a brush to get the creosote out of the chimney.
For burning wood, hard maple and oak are the best choices. It is okay to burn birch and poplar. Pine will create the most creosote. It is okay to burn newspaper, but cardboard and glossy magazines pages should be avoided.
